Photo Meditations

The purpose of this section is to provide you with a destination for your imagination and reflection. This destination is away from the noise of life’s demands and distractions. It is a place to be quiet and circumspect.

the approach

1. Be Still

To start, spend at least 5 minutes looking at the picture.

Open the image to full screen and turn off your data to create an uninterrupted space.

We aren’t used to sitting still with one image. We aren’t used to sitting still at all. If and when you are tempted to look away, turn your attention to your breath and keep your eyes on the picture. Breath in and out. What you observe and how you feel will show you something about yourself.

After 5 minutes has passed hopefully you will feel yourself starting to relax and let go. Stay as long as you like. Push through at least one urge to move on.

If your mind goes in a certain direction, stop and write. Free flow. It doesn’t have to make sense (but I bet it will!).

2. Read

Move on to the reading. Read slowly. See if you connect with the themes. If not, that’s okay too.

Be curious about your own thoughts.

Be honest.

Sometimes I’ll throw in a story about our travels or my experiences. That’s just for fun.

3. Write

If you didn’t write before or you want to do more, move on to the writing prompts.

Observe your thoughts and feelings but don’t judge or shame yourself. Be compassionate. Be aware that ego and self-preservation might try to keep your feelings on the surface.

Connect with yourself. Don’t be afraid. Dig deep. Be brave.

That’s it! Enjoy your time pulling away from the rush and the noise.

Skye

The land formations on Skye were immensely overwhelming to me. I’m not sure I’ve felt the same anywhere else on earth.

Lotus

Her place in this world is magnificent and glorious and serene. It doesn’t look like a lot of work, to just be herself. And yet, she’s a wonder.

I Can’t Stay Here

This morning I tried to ground myself in a photo meditation. I didn’t know if I would be able to, but I thought I’d try. This is my own medicine after all; I should try to take it.

Ontario Storm

For me, it’s all beauty and majesty and the exciting reminder that nature is so… other. And wild and big. And great.

Until the wind gets carried away.
